Here's what I want to know - what's the etiquette when taking these shots? Do you ask people, or just snap away? Do you have a business card to give them?

Thanks to you all for the comments. I was wondering if there would be any objections to the close framing. None so far, and even explicit approval from Damon. I do like tight framing, myself, but was forced to use it here in any case, as there was a pole in front of the hat brim on the left side of the frame.
In answer to Wait's question, I have to say that I used a rather sneaky approach for this one, and at the time, I did have serious reservations about doing it. I now use a DSLR, and of course, have to raise it to eye level. This was taken with my old digicam, and was done by placing it casually on top of my crossed legs (to get more height), and looking at the rear screen.
I justify this to myself by my motives and the results. I wanted to produce a sympathethic, objective image, and I think I've done so. By the way, whatever one may think of this, I wasn't doing anything illegal, according to the law here in Australia.
