At the Japanese Summer Festival

Posted by Andrew Gould (Sydney, Australia) on 2 February 2008 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.

This was taken in Sydney's Darling Harbour. To sum it up, there was lots of activity, colour and excitement, and, of course, Japanese food. Good luck with the weather, too, as the forecast was for more rain (see yesterday's photo), but the sun was out all afternoon.

The problem, though, for a photographer trying to catch close ups in this situation with hundreds of people present, is isolating an interesting subject from intrusive elements in the background. Mostly because of this, I ended up keeping 53 shots out of more than 400.

In this case, what took away attention from the main subject was the drink bottle, at the top in the middle. It was bright green with some yellow on the label. I fixed this with the Color Replacement Tool in Photoshop, choosing a dark tone from the background as a substitute. Neither did I like the two pieces of paper near the bottle, as they were very bright, but the Burn Tool solved that.
