Posted by Andrew Gould (Sydney, Australia) on 16 May 2008 in Lifestyle & Culture and Portfolio.
I took this yesterday afternoon (Friday 16th of May) at 5:17 pm.
There is another photograph in my portfolio of this monument to the first colonists of Sydney that you can see here: http://andrewgould.aminus3.com/image/2007-08-07.html
In this present photo, though, the qualiity of the light is very different. I was able to take this hand held, thanks to my Sigma 18-200mm optical stabilizer lens, at 1/10th of a second (as indicated in the EXIF information, above).
The little noise that was visible (mostly in the sky), has been further reduced in processing the original Raw file in Adobe Camera RAW in Photoshop CS3. Here, I raised both the colour noise and luminance noise controls just enough to minimise the noise. This does not seem to effect the sharpness of the image in a noticeable way. (Sharpened with Photoshop's Smart Sharpen before upload, in any case.)
Thanks for visiting my pages. I welcome all comments and any constructive criticism.

Very strange light for this shot ! I can't say if it was night or day ! Nice !

@pierre: Thanks for commenting, Pierre. It actually wasn't quite day or night at the time. The sun sets at about 5:00pm in Sydney at this time of the year, and at 5:24:24, when I took this, it was twilight. The monument is very well lit, so it would be the combination of the natural light and the street lighting that gives it this effect.
Very nice shot, Andrew ... the lighting adds a nice touch

@Ron: Thanks, Ron.
Fabulous image and almost symmetric. Thanks for your explanation to Pierre, I was going to ask the same...:)

@Observing: Thanks for your positive feedback. I'm extra glad I gave that explanation, then.
i like the light in the background and also the light hitting the right side of the tree, it adds more of a stunning shot.

The lighting really makes this special. At first, I thought this was double-daylight!

Great image

Asides from being a excellently composed shot the most striking thing bout this photograph is the "ambiguity" of the light (which you have touched on above more than once). It is a great shot and your explanations about how taken and processed are always great. Thank You

Nice monument. The lighting in this image is terrific and the trees framing it is lovely. Such a blue ocean.
