In the street - 4

More from my walk down George St, Sydney on Tuesday afternoon this week.

The building on the right is the old General Post Office, which now has a hotel inside it. The open space between it and the next building is Martin Place. I'll be taking you for a little walk up this pedestrian only area to finish this series.

Nice work Andrew, your street scenes have a great feel to them. Looking back at the last few, I think its the sharp crisp feel you give to your bw rendering. Keep up the great work.

A lot of nice things in this image. I normally love the structures and these are wonderful, but what strikes me most about this shot is the glass in the taxi. It's so clean and clear.

...oooohhhh, Andrew, I have to admit, I'm a sucker for old architecture like churches, opera houses, castles and the like. I love the angle but the taxi distructs my eye from the buildings.
But here is an interesting thing for me, I can see a modern building in the background and the juxtaposition of old and new is intriguing... that's an interesting angle to explore.
... and the decor on that building is beautiful, show us more.!!!

@Ken McCoy: Thank you, Ken. I use the new black and white filter in Photoshop CS3. This has even more control than using the Channel Mixer with the monochrome box checked, although I find this latter method can still produce excellent results, too. I avoid simply using the Desaturate option, as this throws colour information away completely.

By the way, my whole workflow is as follows. I go from RAW to 16 bit TIFF, and when I'm satisfied with the latter, I decide if I'm going to try black and white. This gives me plenty of leeway in tonal range for both the colour and black and white versions. I only convert to 8 bit TIFF for a smaller file size when I won't be making any more changes. Then I use CS3's Smart Sharpen before converting to JPEG for upload. There you have it complete!
