Balmain - 1

Posted by Andrew Gould (Sydney, Australia) on 27 September 2008 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio.

Balmain is 5kms to the west of Sydney's Central Business District. This is the main thoroughfare, Darling St, at midday last Sunday. A few more photos from that day to come, showing something of the cafes and street life of this popular area.

By the way, this was a very difficult exposure to get right due to the extreme contrast range from those bright highlights to the deepest shadows. The original RAW file contains just enough of the highlights, very deep shadows and is greatly lacking in contrast. In other words, it's very dull looking tonally. This is what I wanted, as it then lends itself to manipulation in Photoshop. Perspective was way off in the original with buildings leaning in every direction from pointing the camera downwards to include the foreground. As I was after realism, I fixed that in PS, too.

I would like to keep in touch with members of the aminus3 community.
