(One of) My Special Place(s)Posted by Andrew Gould (Sydney, Australia) on 7 November 2008 in Cityscape & Urban and Portfolio. I couldn't come up with anything for this challenge proposed by Kylie Greenan http://kgreenan.aminus3.com/ for today... at least, I thought I couldn't, until I realised that this photo, that I took yesterday morning in the Sydney city centre was actually of one of my most favourite places to stroll around, look for interesting photographic subjects, and to have a sit down and watch the world pass by. So here it is. This is the side of what was once the very grand General Post Office in Martin Place, Sydney. These large post offies are now gone, and this one has been turned into a hotel inside. This post, then, presents only a detail of this area. To see more extensive views, click on the martinplace tag. As you'll see from the EXIF information, this is another photo from my new Canon G10 compact. One of the limitations of the small sensor is that it doesn't have the ability to capture the brightness range that a good DSLR can. The brightest highlights were so bright in this case that the left side triangle of the base of the column was totally burnt out. As I wanted to keep the shot, I resorted to repeatedly cloning detail from another area of the base at a low opacity until I was satisfied with the effect. Not an ideal situation, but then I don't see this camera as being a total substitute for my 40D, with it's incredible ability to capture an extended brightness range, especially when Highlight Tone Priority is enabled. The G10 can save the day, though. I would like to keep in touch with members of the aminus3 community.
