Last week I went by one store I really like and saw "Going out of Business Sale" in the window...but today I saw just "SALE" in the window...I didn't have time to run in and ask, but I am hoping that means that they are staying in business longer.

It's tough everywhere, but here in the USA, my parents and grandparents survived much worse in the Depression which lasted more than 10 years and saw unemployment at 15% through 1940. There have been 11 recessions since then, and we have survived all of them somehow. I think we can survive this.

@Laurie: This economic downturn has hit Australia as well, although I don't know if it has anything to do with these cases. The top photo was taken in Newtown, an inner suburb of Sydney which has a huge thriving shopping area, full of restaurants and cafes. It's positively teeming with people at night, and the eating places are generally full. The bottom photo was taken in a different area of Sydney. In this case, all the shops in that particular block were closed, which makes me think that the area must be up for redevelopment.
