Sydney Opera House, Luminous festival

Taken on Sunday the 7th of this month during the Luminous festival (26th May to 14th June), when various buildings round the this area of the harbour were specially lit up. The patterns projected onto the Opera House roof remained static for quite a long time before changing, giving the effect of abstract paintings. Taken hand held, aided by my Sigma 18-200mm optical stabilizer lens.

@Graham Russon: Thanks, Graham. I can't always get away with such a low shutter speed, but it seems that a combination of best effort to stay still on the exhale plus the technology has done the trick this time.

@Laurie: Thanks, Laurie. It is really magical down there at night, even with just the normal lighting, with Opera House and the Harbour Bridge, (out of view to the left), the activity of people strolling around, and the cafes and restaurants.

There are a few places in the world where I'd like to go. This is definitely one. And the picture does enhance the place! I saw you also had a G10 along with your 40D. How do you like it?

@Chris: Yes, there's certainly a lot of world out there to explore.
For me, the G10 is wonderful as a take everywhere camera. At 80 to 100 ISO its 14.7 megapixels produce outstanding detail and richness. You can see this in the gallery I give a link to below, where many photos are from this camera. 200 to 400 ISO is quite satisfactory, but above that, there's rather too much noise. F2.8 and excellent optical stabilisation compensate for this to a degree, though. It's not as fast in operation as a DSLR, either. Finally, I would say that for serious photography, it's essential to shoot RAW. In a good RAW converter, like Adobe Camera RAW, you can reduce any noise and usually keep the brightest highlights from burning out. See the next post after this present one (if you havn't already) for a G10 night photo. A search on the Internet for tests of the G10 and also the Panasonic LX3 would be a good idea if you're interested in a high quality compact.
